Does she walk around with that on, occasionally headbutting walls and furniture?? How cruel!! And hilariousJenny Ryan wrote: We have never had a mishap with our dogs with glues etc about the worst we have had is since Chloe watched Ned Kelly , now we just have to keep her away from tissue boxes !

Re: JTs StuIG 33B
Hi, here's an update. The magic tracks are glued together but they have shallow ejector pin marks. So I made another sanding stick to fit into the narrow flat area of the tracks to sand them off.
The model will have new fenders from Aber and a Voyager detail set. I thought I would try soldering the fenders to make the joins strong enough, and then dent them somewhat. I have a soldering iron with a temperature control, and I used lead free solder and Aber soldering helper or flux.
Here is one of the fenders. I'm still new to soldering and pretty rough, so I added it to places were it would be hard or impossible to see, like the underside here. I also annealed the fender frames first to soften them for bending, but this left them covered in oxide. So unfortunately the solder joints were not as strong as they should have been.
Once they were on I added a few bends, which caused some of the solder joints to break. These were repaired with superglue.
These parts were not annealed, and the joins were much better.
The small PE details will not be soldered, I'll use superglue for those.
Slowly getting there!
Cheers
JT

Superbness , I usually avoid annealing any parts needing soldering and avoid soldering any that need annealing as a general rule but if you have to anneal them then you can get a glass scratch pen but IMHO save your poor fingers and throw the glass scratch pen in the bin , even the tiny discards will cause agony !

You can also remove the oxidisation with a pencil eraser, and save yourself the needles of agony.

Thanks for the feedback and help, I still got plenty to learn about solderising as you can tell! Thanks Jenny, I've heard of those pens, but I'm not looking for more agony!

Re: JTs StuIG 33B
Hi JT:
It's all looking good. And your soldering looks much better than mine (because I don't have any of that flux helper stuff). And it all appears to be coming together real nice. And instead of sanding or scratch pencils, I hear that two sided sticky tape works real good for that. You should get some and see how good a job it does .

Two sided sticky tape is GREAT stuff, I end up wearing most of it
The assembly is finished, here are shots taken by some pesky paparazzi:

Re: JTs StuIG 33B
Looks superb JT. guessing from the way the cable is hung from the lifting hook, I'd wager that this is going to be grey with whitewash and a load of snow on the tracks and crucially over the roadwheels and suspension

Hiya JT:
You have done another amazing job of construction with this. But(t crease) I wonder how the crew felt about having that great big box right in front of the two escape hatches on the back of the fighting compartment. Oh. . . . And the fenders came out real nice too with all the rest of the brass work.

Re: JTs StuIG 33B
Hi Gary, now I think I know why I've seen a few of these with the front box missing!
Time for an update. First I screwed the hull onto a stand I use for handling, then washed everything with warm soapy water and rinsed. When dry, primer was applied. I like this one or Mr Surface primer, both seem very similar and have excellent adhesion to plastics and brass (or so has been my experience).
The trouble is they are too light so I followed with very dark brown almost black, to fill all shadows from the start. Then a few coats of Worn Effects fluid, not too much as the chips will be small at this point.
I mixed the panzergrey myself by eye and airbrush on, with a little variation in shade.
Immediately I used a damp coarse paint brush to add chips and scratches. It's an exercise in restraint, heavy chipping is not really warranted here. (You can see a little of the dark brown has been worn off, but the white primer seems to be intact. To be touched up latter.)
The kits decals were quite thick and a bit uncooperative. Some gloss varnish was airbrushed in their locations first, before applying the decals. When dry I brushed on a thick coat of this Decal Medium, after an hour or two the decals had settled nicely onto the surface. It was still a mix of flat and gloss sheen, so flat varnish was airbrushed over them. (The Tamiya Flat Base is not a varnish in itself but is added to paint or gloss clear to make it flat.)
With Mike Rinaldi's new book as an aid, I am looking forward to trying my first white wash but I'm experimenting on trial pieces for now.
Thanks for looking
JT

That's looking rather nice JT. Which method did you use to distress the whitewash?

Hiya JT:
Some really kewl stuff there. Do you like the weathering effects stuff better than just hairspray? I am thinking of trying to experiment with the hairspray for the first time and was just wondering how much better if any the stuff is.
