MoDio European Arch with Base Kit # BM-004
MoDio base in 1/35th Scale
By Shawn W. Gehling
This is one of many bases that Num (Narongkorn Wongwaen) has made, all of which are beautiful. He has Small, Medium (which this is) and Large bases. If you are looking for a really cool base to display your work on, one of these might fit the build. Check out this website:
http://www.thaimsot.com/en/forum/54-%E0%B8%A3%E0%B9%89%E0%B8%B2%E0%B8%99-MoDio/30410-MoDio-catalogue---%E0%B9%81%E0%B8%84%E0%B8%95%E0%B8%95%E0%B8%B2%E0%B8%A5%E0%B9%8A%E0%B8%B4%E0%B8%AD%E0%B8%81%E0%B9%82%E0%B8%A1%E0%B8%94%E0%B8%B4%E0%B9%82%E0%B8%AD?limit=15
Please note that it is in Thai, but the information pictures have English descriptions for the kits.
I also highly recommend that you register and look around at all there is to see on this site. If you are like me and can't read Thai, click the English flag on the right.
Num is an outstanding modeler in his own right and has marketed a bunch of really cool bases that will enhance or display many different models. The detail is outstanding and very crisp.
Price is 350.00 Thai Baht or about $11.41 in US Dollars (depending on the current exchange rate of the day).
The European Arch with base Kit # BM-004:
Contains 2 pieces of plaster which is finely molded with great detail and requires little or no sanding/clean up.
Part 1 is the base (groundwork) and consists of a hard packed roadway and a damaged brick sidewalk (Or maybe the whole road was brick once? Only your imagination can decide.) closest to the half circle stone steps leading up to Part 2 the arched stone entrance. This can be pretty much any area of Southern Europe and can display a small vehicle and or figures.
Part 2 was received “cleanly” broken in two places, which is no problem at all and can (I intend to add more battle damage anyways) be repaired with “elmers” white glue the same way part 2 (the arched stone entrance) will be attached to part 1 (the roadway) base. (I spoke with April and gave her a suggestion on shipping which barring any mishandling by the postal service should get yours to you without any damage). They are also going to see about using a stronger plaster, but I'm sure it will arrive safely.
Repair to the damaged parts and clean up took about 10 minutes. The battle damage that I plan to make to it might take a bit longer, but it's easy to work with and looks great. I can't wait to get some paint on this beauty.
I recently moved and this was the 1st package that I received at my new address. How cool is that?
I highly recommend this kit for anyone who enjoys displaying small dioramas/vignettes or figures. I would like to thank Anarongkor (Num) Wongwaen and Apiradee (April) Wongwaen of MoDio Models for the review kit.
Apriadee (April) can be reached via these methods if you have any questions.

Shawn,
I don't know how can I say thank you and how can I say to you guys all here as well to let me have the chance for this community, especially this forum post from you, Shawn.
I'd just register for this site because I was recommended TnT by Shawn...
Actually, the base I sent to you just only the gift for our friendship.
Frankly speaking, I was so shy when I read your post. A million thanks.
I'm welcome to give you more info about the base if you need.
Unfortunately, the base I sent to Shawn was not well for packaging because this stage is under develop until we launch the product export. That was why I tried to ship this to Shawn to test this.
I'm sure that future development to get better and stronger base.
Thank you again.
Num (Narongkorn)
P.S. My wife (April) she is helping me for all marketing even help me in English, Please feel free to contact her as Shawn mentioned Email.

European Arch with base Kit # BM-004
Num,
It was my pleasure and honor to do the review...
Everyone that knows me, knows that I won't candy coat anything. The kit is super
and the detail is outstanding. I'm not one to leave well enough alone, so I planned to add a little battle damage to mine anyways. (I tend to try and make mine a little different from the rest) kinda like me.
I am very glad I met you and got you to join this great group. You have given us (as a group) some great models to look at and your knowledge as a modeler has been excellent to have. Some of what you have shown us, I would not have ever thought of trying, but after seeing what you have done, I'm looking forward to doing fruit and such.
I look forward to taking this base to my local model meeting tomorrow (Friday) night and show it off to all the guys. I'm also taking it with me to the Seattle meeting on Saturday to show it off there.
I wish you all the luck in the world in getting your company off the ground. I know that I will be purchasing a few of your other bases, (the quality and price are excellent) and I can find a million uses for a whole bunch of them. I like to bases ready to just put a kit on to display it and some of Num's small bases will really be sweet for that.
Jenny, You know that I think you are one of the best modelers I have ever met (even if it is only on the internet). Your opinion is something that I hold in high regard, So to have you say I do well here, makes me pretty proud that I have found this group. As always, I am telling anyone that will listen that this is the "best" model site ever.
And I truly mean it.
Thanks for letting me be a part of this.
Shawn

Num,
Your base was a hit both at our local meeting and at the Seattle meeting.
Hope you do well (I gave them both yours and Aprils E-mails).
Now for those of you that couldn't see his other bases... Here they come.
Large bases:
Medium Bases:
Small Bases:
There was not BS019...
Ok, tell me there isn't at least one of these bases that you can't use
Enjoy and contact Num if you want to buy one of his bases.

Re: MoDio European Arch with Base Kit # BM-004
Well, I managed to do a little more work on this sweet little base.
Basic paint and some weathering.
All paint was water based acrylic paints.
The bricks were painted with a mix of black and burgundy.
The road was done with teddy bear, coffee late and parchment.
The mossy wash was done with old ivy.
Static grass was placed between some of the stones and in the road.
More to follow.

TRM,
If the rest are half this good, which I'm sure they are, you won't be disappointed.
Num, Thanks. I've got a long way to go, I'm planning to do a lot more to this sweet
little base.

Re: MoDio European Arch with Base Kit # BM-004
Ok, I just can't leave well enough alone... I'm having way too much fun with this base.
I thought that it would look great with a door on the archway, so...
It was scratch built from thick balsa wood, cut into strips and braces were added.
I beat it up to give it some age. and painted it with a wash of "DecoArt acrylic (Heavenly Hues) Plaster and Ceramic washes "Blissful Beige"
Overview of new door
Close up of new door
Back of new door (yes I put hinges on it so it would open and close)
Door open
Door detail was added (Grandt Line HO scale 2 1/2" nut - 6" square washer), which were painted with an acrylic "Folk Art" Metallic Antique copper.
The door was then given a heavy coat of pastel chalks dusted and mashed into the wood. (black and rust around the nuts/washers).
Again I placed a tank and some figure for scale reference... Hope you enjoy it.
I have a dio in mind for this, but it will have to wait a little bit, so I can get back
to some of the group builds I have neglected.
Num, This was a lot of fun to make and as you can see I'm still having fun putting different vehicles and such on it to take pictures. Thank you again for sending it to me and letting me do a review of it.

Shawn, thanks to review and said that my sweet base you'd got.
Franky speaking, I love the way you did with my base as what you said "a lot of fun you have".
I plan to send another one (may be a bigger one) to you again but you may wait so long because I'm very busy with a new diorama shop I'd opened with my partner in Bangkok.

Hello My Friend...
Num,,
I know what you mean by being busy.
I've been working on small projects here and there.
What are you working on? Anything new and exciting?
Do you need anything from over this way.
Keep in touch my friend.
