Vallejo Pigments

I saw these on the Vallejo website .

"The pigments chosen for this range are all earth and iron oxides, especially suitable for all the different climatic and geographical conditions of the terrain of a diorama. They are pigments which are employed in the manufacture of our colors, and have been especially processed and micronized so that they are very easily dispersed in any liquid medium, from water to acrylic resins or turpentine.

To adhere the pigment to the surface of the model Matte Medium is used, or Glaze Medium which dries more slowly and allows more time to simulate water and snow run-offs and to move the pigment into and around the details of the model.

Many other special effects can be obtained by mixing pigments with the products in our Water & Stone range as for example with Transparent Water to achieve effects of oil and grease stains, or Sandy Paste to create a rough, coarse surface for heavy dried mud or flaking deep rust.

Earth and Iron Oxide pigments are not toxic, but to avoid accidental spillage they are packaged with a childproof top. In 30 ml. pots (weight from 17-39 grams, according to pigment). "

They sound very impressive check them out at the Vallejo website . I will definately be trying these out !

Rumour is MIG is somehow connected to this - I can't remember the exact story, but I gather there may be no love lost? As I said, not 100% sure - Rick may know more?

But be that as it may, it'll be interesting to compare the AV pigments to those of MIG. AV will definitely have the distribution advantage though, as almost certainly anyone stocking AV paints will start carrying the pigments - like LuckyModel for example...

I think we're in for interesting times - well mildly interesting...

vallejo pigments ... interesting ... well ... hmmmmmm ... like rudi stated - mildly interesting ... another chance to loose a pouch of golden coins for a tiny glass of pigments when artist supplier stores sell the very same stuff for some pennies ... hmmm ... ok ... at least some competition in the modelling market!

Laura, we should make also such a business - buy the stuff at Kremer´s and sell it in very small portions very expensive.

All I have to say is , it is a new product . People can use whichever pigment they choose . I will try them & make my own decision .

My apologies to all for raising the initial question (MIG vs AV). In all sincerity, I wasn't setting out to create a similar discussion as the one that took place on Armorama. In fact I'd not even read the whole thing, until now. I had heard the rumours, but it was enough for me to hear Pete say MIG's not happy.

Anyways, Richard, I agree with you ~ let's leave these drama creating discussions for other places.

In the new book "modelers guide" they are used to a good effect.

Is a pigment a pigment?

They may look the same in the bottle, but the truth is all are not created equal.
The fineness of the grain is the proof of the pudding.
Just compare "artist grade oils" with "Student grade oils" and you can clearly see the difference.

Another factor is purity.
How pure is the pigment you are buying, and what fillers were used to bulk it out?

Another factor that needs to be considered is the mixers color perception.
Not everyone can actually mix pigments and end up with a correct color.
If they could then everyone one would be using nothing but "artist grade oils" to do all their painting, and not using 254 thousand premixed colors from various manufactures.
So convenience and ease of use comes into play.

As to what brand is better----- it's just another one of those never ending "discussions".

Use what you like, like what you use, and shop around until you find one you like.
Of course ALL manufactures are going to say they have the best.
Just look at the other little "competition wars" going on everywhere else in the media and the world, not just in modeling.

I have read the Armorama blogs. Those conflicts are the sole reason I only post here. I have been watching that on other sites for 15 years now. It is like an incurable disease, once infected, it can't be stopped and only grows worse.

I like it here because I read and post strictly for enjoyment. It is a "fun" place to hang out! I can find conflict anywhere, certainly this hobby has way too much of it! Let's really try to keep those kind of discussions at the "other" sites and out of here! You guys have really and truly impressed me with your support of your fellow modelers on this site! I frankly would not have believed this kind of comraderie on a blog site could exist had I not experienced it personally!

Jenny had a wonderful idea and found the right folks to make it work!

Thanks, you and I have been into this kind of stuff with clubs, shows, etc. You have the distinction of being my only elder here! (Sorry!) The only two places that worked like this site were, Mastercon and this site! Mastercon is gone forever or will be after this next one, so this site is really important to modelers who hate all that back biting, feuding and constant criticism like other model blog sites!

Indeed Richard, couldn't agree more, those things were the reasons I never before joined a modelling forum, in T&T we have a forum with people who enjoy modelling and respect eachother, and not try to make someone else look bad to make them selves look better!

Let us keep the T&T spirit High! (Even if it means we have to wear pink all the time in honour of our Supreme Pinknes )
