leFH18/40, Sd.Kfz.11 - 'LOST!!'
Hi folks
This is what I think I will build for this Group Build, here is the 'Howitzer going mate' gun:
To be in tow behind a Leichte Zugkraftwagen 3t Sd.Kfz.11 Einheltsfahrerhaus PoopenSchfinterfarten Sumthinorother
On a small base with a couple of figures in casual poses, I have no idea what they will be, I rarely do figures. Actually, feel free to make suggestions. Thanks
Cheers

Re: leFH18/40, Sd.Kfz.11 - 'LOST!!'
Oh Kewl , Hmmm Figures ..... Leave it with me .
A Leichte Zugkraftwagen 3t Sd.Kfz.11 Einheltsfahrerhaus PoopenSchfinterfarten Sumthinorother , well I think the shortened version is LikethepizzaHaus and they were often used to deliver food to troops on the front line (specially the Italians) .... actually the back of the tray is ideal to carry a looted cupboard with ultra realistic woodgrain finish
Do you envision the tractor actually towing the gun or alongside it in a firing position ?

You know, sometimes I think you two are using English, but you're just using some strange Antipodean patois.
It's good fun though.

Hi guys, thanks for looking. At last I'm getting round to this, here are the dated start photos:
Now I've opened the plastic and looked at the sprues, I can say the parts looked real sharp and finely detailed. They appear to be very nice kits (so far).
Cheers

Re: leFH18/40, Sd.Kfz.11 - 'LOST!!'
Hi Gary, I aim to please: here is progress on the howitzer.
Did I say these look like nice kits? Oh well The breech, frame and recoil rail are done. There's lots of small parts to the kit, and unfortunately they don't fit together very happily. You can see the grey material which is Mr Surfacer 500 that I used to fill gaps.
The arrow points to the recoil cylinder pushrod, which was styrene but I replaced with a bit of a paperclip. I did this because it's already shiny metal.
The poor fit and seam removal really slow things down. Thanks for following.
Cheers

Hiya JT ,
Well it is a good start I think unless it is firing , shouldn't the recoil cylinder butt (crease) up to the breech ?
Jenny

Hi Gary, remember: shiney good!!! Burney bad!!!
Hi Jenny, well spotted!! The gun is not glued in there yet. With such keen observations, we cannot help butt increase our knowledge!!

Re: leFH18/40, Sd.Kfz.11 - 'LOST!!'
Hi folks, here are some progress shots. As you can see the kit includes a turned aluminium barrel and brass recoil cylinder. There's no PE and I'm not going down that road, but many of the small details do lend themselves to a PE upgrade.
There are some sink marks, some of which already have grey filler shown here. The tricky ones are inside the wheel rims:
Assembly almost done. Cheers!

Re: leFH18/40, Sd.Kfz.11 - 'LOST!!'
Hi, the leFH18/40 Howitzer is built and ready for paint. Despite my criticisms, it builds into a nicely detailed model.
The main components left unglued, ready to be painted.
Next the halftrack, plus some items to be organised for a small diorama also.
Cheers

Re: leFH18/40, Sd.Kfz.11 - 'LOST!!'
Hi, a further update.
The frame of the halftrack is together, next will be cleaning up the wheels and front end.
The diorama will probably have a tree, so I started making one from twisted copper wire and leaves from this Kamizukuri Birch Tree kit.
The leaves are paper, already cut out. I glued them onto the branches with superglue.
The wire was coated with some 'goop', PVA glue mixed with talcum powder, just to hide the spiralling strands.
When I had a few branches I twisted them together and glued with superglue. The trunk is thicker wire. Next came the tricky but crucial part, that is to bend the leaves and branches until they look natural. I'm keeping in mind that there are two things influencing the shape of these. First there is the way the branches and leaves will grow in a way to catch the most light, so upwards with leaf tops facing the sun overhead. Second is gravity, tending to arch branches out and down, and leaves also pointing down a little at the ends.
The trunk needs to be covered and formed, so more soon, cheers.

Re: leFH18/40 + Sd.Kfz.11 -Updated 6 April
The model tree looks lovely, but gods, all the leaves that need to be cut out!!! I'm looking forward to seeing how you're going to paint the howitzer, seeing that you've already assembled it and there are a lot of tight places for any brush to get into... it looks excellent so far!!

Re: leFH18/40, Sd.Kfz.11 - 'LOST!!'
Hi Erika, thanks for taking a look. The leaf clusters are already cut out, and are just held to the sheet by two little tabs. Just like photo etch. I've made branches before with PE leaves, but this was easier as the paper glues better and faster to the wire than brass.
It looks like a lot of tedious work but I found it relatively straight forward, just three days work so far for this tree.
Cheers

Re: leFH18/40, Sd.Kfz.11 - 'LOST!!'
Hiya JT:
The gun looks great, and you have a great start on the halftrack. And the tree looks real nice too. I was wondering though, wouldn't it have been easier to paint the leaves when they were still on the sheet? Just wondering
Well. . . I have a 20,000 peso bill I could give you, but I would want change. Butt seein as you probably aren't close enough to Mexico to get me pesos for change, I guess that 19,100 Austramaralian dollars change will do .
And where I wonder did you learn your math? $25.00 X 9 equals $300 ? ? ?
Gary

OH CR&P!!!!
Yep I think that would have been easier, even though the branches need to be painted latter anyway. Ah well

Looking great JT , I always try to paint my Kamizakuri first too makes it easier not to miss bits . and you can paint the trunk seperately and then touch up after assembly . Oh well .
